Business Award Categories 2017

The following award categories are open to all businesses that excel in their field and business procedures.  Businesses may enter up to three award categories.

Excellence Award – This award celebrates excellence in all aspects of business development and customer focus, ensuring that services provided are useful and relevant to current and potential customers. As a core practice the business must drive growth through a clear understanding of customer values.  The judges are looking for:

  • Belief and ethos of excellent customer service, engaging with customers in new and interesting ways
  • Enhanced prospects and profitability by putting the customer at the heart of its business
  • Demonstrate success and excellence in their field

Best Employer Award – This award recognises those organisations who ensure their employees are at the heart of their success. Entrants are expected to show how they invest in their staff, engage and include them in the business and outline what it is they do that makes for a happy and healthy workforce. The judges are looking for:

  • Evidence of providing a supportive working environment via adopting family-friendly initiatives
  • Positive policies and procedures to enable employee training and development
  • Employee engagement and support, with a proactive approach to recognising and rewarding employee contributions

Innovation & Growth Award – This award recognises the success of businesses that have created and  developed innovative products or processes that have improved the performance of their company or led to significant growth.  The judges are looking for:

  • Evidence of effective innovation
  • Commercial impact and long term effectiveness of the innovation
  • Sustainable, with potential and capacity for growth

Green Award – This award recognises those businesses where sustainability is at the centre of their activities and who are making the greatest efforts to reduce their environmental impact.  The judges are looking for:

  • A service or product delivered in an environmental and sustainable manner
  • Sustainability built into the planning and daily operations of the business
  • The involvement and engagement of staff

Commitment to the Community Award – This award celebrates businesses who have made a committed and proactive approach and contribution to the enhancement and benefit within the community.  The judges are looking for:

  • Schemes, initiatives and polices which have a maximum positive impact on the local community and environment
  • Successful and sustainable, with potential and capacity for growth
  • How the business involves their staff and customers in their community work

Rising Star Award – This award celebrates and supports a company’s service or product that’s created, produced or manufactured in the borough whilst demonstrating a real passion for the business, with a strong business plan and forecasts for growth.  The judges are looking for:

  • Evidence that products or service is created, produced or manufactured in the borough
  • Demonstrate commitment to the community to local employment and suppliers
  • Demonstration of innovation and leadership
  • Potential for growth

Best Small Business Award – This award celebrates businesses employing between 1-50 members of staff and a turnover of less than £1million. This award will go to the business that has achieved consistent growth backed by a strong financial performance, while demonstrating a clear understanding of the market that it operates in.  The judges are looking for:

  • A solid sustainable business plan, with potential and capacity for growth
  • Evidence of good customer service including polices, procedures  and testimonials
  • Effective marketing tools, recruitment policies, economic and social benefits for the local community

Best Medium Sized Business Award – This award celebrates businesses employing between 50-250 employees and a turnover of between £1m-£15m.  This award will go to the business that has achieved consistent growth backed by a strong financial performance, while demonstrating a clear understanding of the market that it operates in. The judges are looking for:

  • A solid sustainable business plan, strong leadership and management
  • Evidence of good customer service including polices, as well as economic and social benefits for the local community
  • Effective marketing tools, recruitment policies, economic and social benefits for the local community
